How to get your home ready to sell?

At Dulux, we’re lucky enough to have a whole host of experts who are passionate about design. We’ve asked a few of them to put their heads together to tackle your latest burning question…

Rebecca Williamson, Senior Colour Design Manager says…

It’s all about striking the right balance between a tidy space and one that still feels homely and lived in to create an inviting atmosphere. If you have any awkward areas, add a few simple touches to help people see how they can live in the space; a small nook beneath the stairs could have a nod towards a small home office. If your walls are looking tired, it doesn’t give the best first impression so for a quick and easy refresh add a new coat of Dulux Once to smarten things up in one go. Another trick to try is to create the illusion of space by placing a few cheap and cheerful mirrors around the place to reflect light around the room to open it up.

Marianne Shillingford, Creative Director says…

Have a major de-clutter. You want people to see themselves living in your home, so avoid too much personal stuff getting in the way of their vision. Memorable colour added in a few key places like the bathroom and main bedroom really helps to give a home character and makes it stand out from the crowd – If you have a tiny room in the house like a toilet or cloakroom, paint it in your favourite deep shade. Think about first impressions and add a fresh lick of paint to the most important places like the front door, entrance hall and living room.

Deco hacks

Our team share their top tips to help make your decorating project run oh-so smoothly…

• Did you know a paint roller can hold up to a tester pot’s worth of paint? After you’ve finished painting for the day, make sure you squeeze every last drop out with a paint scraper and pop it back into the tin. Waste not, want not!

• There’s no need to waste time washing brushes and rollers out at the end of the day if you’re going to be painting with the same colours the next day – wrap them up tightly with cling film ensuring no air can get in to dry them out. They’ll last a good few days like that.

• Before you close a tin of paint, give it a quick clean around the edge of the lid can with a cloth – this will stop bits of dried paint falling into the fresh paint when you open it next.
