Time for an update? Here’s our guide to help you find a shade to match your décor.

Redecorating doesn’t always mean starting from scratch, but it can be tricky to pick a colour that works with what you’ve already got. Use this guide as a starting point to help you find your match.

Stone tiles

For dark stone floors, muted blush tones work really well to create balance. Mellow Mocha will bring warmth to your home, whereas a lighter tone such as Almost Oyster has a delicate look. If you’re not keen on pinky neutrals, try a lilac or violet tinted neutral such as Dusted Fondant – it’ll still bring out the beauty in your floor. If you have lighter stone tiles, try a warm neutral such as Natural Hessian or Caramel Latte to create an inviting, relaxed feel.

Grey sofa

Make your sofa the star of the show by giving it a dramatic backdrop a few shades darker than your fabric colour. For a mid-tone sofa, try Warm Pewter; for a lighter tone, Polished Pebble. Add another layer to your scheme with an accent colour – you’re spoilt for choice with grey as it looks amazing with so many colours, but we think using a rich teal as an accent shade really brings a space to life.

Cream upholstery and curtains

There are endless combinations that will work with cream fabrics (which is why you bought it in the first place, right)? So where do you start? The Dulux Visualizer app can help you narrow down your options in situations like these – its colour picker tool allows you to find a colour to match or go with to your item. But here’s the best part; it gives you coordinating colours picked by our experts, taking the guesswork out of finding a complementary colour. If in doubt, an earthy green such as Muted Sage creates a calm and relaxed feel that’s not too cold. Alternatively, a darker shade will add depth to your space – navy blues are fast becoming as popular as greys in living spaces, so try Sapphire Salute.

Oatmeal carpet

Neutral carpets are a great starting point for building a decorating scheme as they can work with so many shades. Rather than try to match the shade of your floor covering exactly, pick a harmonising hue to complement it. A sandstone-like shade such as Nutmeg White will give your space a contemporary, airy feel. Alternatively, try a deeper shade such as Soft Stone for a rich and cosy mood. If your carpet is on the grey side, look to cool blues such as Coastal Grey to create a relaxing sanctuary, or violets such as Lavender Quartz for a fresher, uplifting feel.
